Rio Report – The Paralympic Games 2016

Over the last 4 years I have worked with my colleagues in the British Paralympic Association to ensure that the athletes competing at Rio were as fit as possible and protected from injury and illness whilst at the Paralympic Games. Developing and disseminating the strategy allowed us to really understand how to protect the athletes and staff from the many threats to their health such as Gastroenteritis, Flu and other respiratory infections, Zika and other insect borne disease.

Rio Agios 2016I spent a fascinating 3 weeks in Rio leading the medical team as the chief medical officer during the Games and marvelled at the performance of our athletes, watching them bring home 147 medals including 64 gold medals.

Keeping a show like that on the road was hard work but ultimately a deeply rewarding experience – one to treasure alongside my many other memories from previous games.
